In April, The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation held a hearing to consider online consumer privacy issues, particularly as it relates to the use of behavioral targeting by online advertisers. There currently are a number of legislative and regulatory proposals to address these issues.

Over eight million people were victims of identity theft last year, and overall losses from identity fraud topped $37 billion. BBB has responded to this problem with consumer education and action programs such as Secure Your Identity Day and Protect Your Identity Week

My son has become more social of late. I hadn’t given it much thought until he conceded it’s thanks to Sony. If you’re a gamer, you probably share in his pain. Somewhere between April 16 and 19 the Sony PlayStation Network and Qriocity, the music/video service, was hacked into big time resulting in 77 million account users worldwide with personal information at risk. This week it was revealed that 24.5 million account users of Sony Online Entertainment were put at risk as well.

Many airports and other public spaces offer free wireless, or Wi-Fi, connections for the public to log onto the Internet from their laptop computers. “Hackers are now taking advantage of travelers who want to stay connected,” said BBB President Barry Goggin. “They are setting up fake Wi-Fi connections designed to steal your personal information without you even knowing it.”
